The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.3 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.4, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at magnitude 6.3, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.6.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Esmeraldas (pop. 218,700) located 21 km from the epicenter.
In Valdez (pop. 11,400) located 63 km from the epicenter, Muisne (pop. 13,400) 77 km away, San Lorenzo de Esmeraldas (pop. 20,200) 80 km away, Rosa Zarate (pop. 42,100) 87 km away, and Santo Domingo de los Colorados (pop. 458,600) 156 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

April 25th, 2025 07:55:04 EDT -0400 Significant magnitude 6.3 quake hits 24 km northeast of Esmeraldas, Ecuador early morning

An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 occurred early morning on Friday, April 25th, 2025, at 6:44 am local time near Esmeraldas, Provincia de Esmeraldas, Ecuador, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 6.3, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.3.
218,700) located 24 km from the epicenter, and Valdez (pop. 11,400) 58 km away.
